A long time ago, there were two little birds, young and full of curiosity. They lived in a cosy nest, high in a grand gum tree. But theirs wasn’t just any nest, it was woven with care by their mother, strong and beautiful, a safe haven built to keep them warm and protected from the world.
As the chicks grew, their mother taught them many things, beautiful songs and how to listen to the world around them. The larger chick, filled with boldness, soon left the nest to explore the skies, flying high and far across the land. The mother often gazed after him, hoping to see her smaller bird take flight alongside him, but the littlest chick wasn’t quite ready to leave the comfort of home.
Then one day, a strong wind swept through the land, bending even the tallest trees. The wind carried whispers of faraway places and stories of distant lands. The smaller bird felt a stirring in her heart, a longing to explore beyond the safety of her nest. Her mother noticed the eagerness in her eyes. “Little one,” she said softly, “the wind speaks of change. It’s time for you to discover the world beyond our nest.”
With a gentle touch, the mother led her baby to the edge of the nest. She spoke of the lessons she had learned and the songs of the land that would guide her through her journey. “Though you may fly far, always remember the warmth of our nest and the love it holds. It will always be with you.”
The little bird took a deep breath, her wings fluttering with excitement. With that, she leapt into the sky, joining her brother in flight. Together, they soared over rivers, forests, and mountains, encountering new wonders and making friends along the way. They learned new songs from the earth and sky, songs that would stay with them forever.
No matter how far they flew, the warmth of their mother’s nest was always with them, a comforting reminder of the love that had nurtured them and the home that had shaped them. And whenever the winds of change swept through the trees, their mother would gaze up and smile, knowing that her little birds had taken her lessons to heart and carried the love of their nest wherever they went.
I was inspired to write this story as a tribute to the beautiful balance between motherhood and life, and as a celebration of home. It reflects how my family life and personal growth are intertwined with Nest and Bird, and the profound beauty of this land we call home.
Nest and Bird is proudly Australian, rooted in the vibrant diversity and unique character of our country’s landscapes and communities. I hold deep respect for the Indigenous peoples of Australia, the traditional custodians of this land. Their rich history of storytelling is something I honor in this narrative, which I hope you enjoy as much as I enjoyed writing it.
